Privacy Concerns at UIS followup

Donald Larrieu

An investigation dealing with hidden cameras has been concluded last week. The Campus Safety Committee and Student Government Association opened an investigation to ensure privacy was not being violated. They found that there were no hidden cameras installed in classrooms or offices. The Student Government Association President, Austin Mehmet, explains how hidden cameras would be used.

"...like Sangamon County Police Force, in the course of a criminal investigation, can install hidden surveillance cameras. Because of this, and because they can only be used by official law enforcement, that poses no risk to student safety and we closed the investigation on hidden surveillance cameras. "

All surveillance cameras installed are visible and used to deter crime. Currently, all cameras follow the UIS Camera Policy so students have nothing to worry about.
